We all know the phrase “bullet time “. One of the iconic digital effects methods employed in The Matrix (1999), indelibly alive in our pop cultural memory. The best of VFX imagination burned in like a visual gem supporting dramatic storytelling.

John Gaeta is the innovator and visual effects supervisor responsible for those digital effects. Currently, he is also recognized in the CG community as a leading visionary in our post-cinematic era. John is not stopping with experiential delivery for traditional screens. His inspired work has continued, and quite rapidly of late, linked it to the collaborative dream and day-to-day effort of creating the so-called Metaverse.

The pioneering continues with more risk-taking, radical imagination and speculation. Yes, components will merge and join: realtime graphics, expanded storytelling, immersive display systems (XR), virtual production, artificial intelligence, interactive virtual humans and more. This is Gaeta’s milieu.

We are very fortunate at LA ACM SIGGRAPH Chapter to have John Gaeta as our guest for the next Behind the Pixel (BTP): Past and Present CG Innovators series along with Caroline Giardina of the Hollywood Reporter to guide the conversation.

John is currently Chief Creative Officer at Inworld AI and Co-Founder of Two companies that are taking key steps to flesh out the Metaverse, experientially. He has held positions that include Executive Creative Producer The Matrix Awakens (UE5 experience), SVP of Creative Strategy at Magic Leap and Executive Creative Director of Lucasfilm’s ILMxLAB. John received an Academy Award for his VFX contributions on The Matrix (1999).

Carolyn Giardina is Technology Editor at The Hollywood Reporter (THR). She has been contributing to THR since 2008 and writing its Behind the Screen blog since it launched in 2013.

Conceived and produced and hosted by Diane Piepol, Substance 34 Consulting.
